The Bond of Matrimony

Like many of life’s significant milestones, celebrations such as weddings are often subject to a wide range of traditions and customs.

Steeped in tradition, coins have often been given as gifts to celebrate love. Signifying luck and prosperity, year-dated coins offer the perfect sentiment and are traditionally given to wish the newlyweds the best possible start in life.

A Treasured British Tradition

For centuries, metals have been used to symbolise the bond of matrimony, originating with copper and iron wedding rings to the more modern offerings that include valuable and sought-after precious metals such as gold and silver.

As times changed, new traditions emerged but the intertwining of precious metals was still apparent and in Victorian England, there was a surge of brides receiving a sixpence for their wedding day. As is typically the case with traditions, there is a deeper meaning behind this age-old custom. Many of us will be aware of the verse ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ in reference to what the bride traditionally wears for good luck. However, what is less well known is that the rhyme ends with the additional line ‘and a silver sixpence in her shoe.’ For many years, the father of the bride would slip a sixpence into his daughter’s shoe before she walked down the aisle. In addition to bringing good luck, the sixpence is also said to symbolise that the father wished his daughter prosperity in her marriage.
