In 1673, James II married Mary Beatrice, daughter of Alphonso IV, Duke of Modena. At James II’s coronation, Mary subsequently became the first queen to be crowned in Britain since the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Produced for the coronation of James II, which took place on 23 April 1685, this medal was struck from more than one pair of dies, and is sometimes found coupled with the lettering ‘CORONATION OF JAMES II 1685’. The obverse of the medal features a laureate portrait of Mary with a draped bust, whilst the reverse features the queen seated upon a mound and finished with the inscription ‘O. DEA. CERTE. FINESS’.
